I was standing by the machine when I heard the unbalanced tub spinning/ banging noise. It lasted about 5 seconds and machine then stopped before I could turn it off. stopped. It still agitates and cleans in all cycles , but remains ‘dead’ on all spin cycles. I Drained the full tub of water . Ordered a "Drive Block"… [read that if the tub can turn by hand that this may be the issue [part needed] . What I need now is help on how to remove the agitator cap etc ,the agitator and/or tub to get to this part. thank you. I’m handy, but unfamiliar with whirlpool washer.thanks again… for your replay…

Pry off the cap of the agitator, and you will see another cap inside. Lift it out and you will see a 7/16" bolt which you can remove with a socket wrench and extenstion. The agitator will now lift out.
You will see a "spanner" nut that looks like this.
I would replace it also since it is not expensive and may be damaged when you remove it. You will need the special wrench mentioned to take it off and put it back on.
After you take it off you can remove the spin basket and get to the drive block.
If this does not fix you should check out the clutch
Thanks sidfink43 for perfect answer to my question.
Was able to get as far as spanner nut…and thought before going further I better check to lid switch… opened the control panel … and bridged the switch… and just today finished two loads of wash!!.. The gods were with me yesterday, because did not want to get the spanner tool and dig deeper.Glad it was a superficial wound… LOL. . Thanks again Sid. Al
Well good, glad you were able to figure that out and thanks for the update.
