Washer won’t agitate or spin. Hum and Smell of burning electrical equipment. I looked at timer, no burns, no smells. Turned on side, motor is source of smell. I can turn by hand. Any Ideas?
I can spin motor easily in one direction by hand. In the other, I can spin several revolutions, then it stops. There is a disk at the top of the trans. I can turn in one direction with effort, and in the other with a lot of effort. Tub seems to bang occasionally when I turn the hard way. Note: Machine is on its side when I do all this.
Hi.
Remove the cabinet.
Remove the drain pump and the motor.
Install the jumper at the lid switch plug.
Start the washer and check the motor performance.

Never lay the washer on the floor, the spin basket will drag against the tub.You can tilt it back some to test things. Once the motor is removed, turn the tranny coupler clock wise till the clutch engages, if very hard to turn, you either have bad brake shoes, or something stuck in the tub. You can shine a light in the tub to check for a piece of clothes in there.
If the motor still smokes when removed, you most probably have a bad timer, and a motor that is questionable.
I put it back on its feet and looked in the tub and felt around under the agitator. Nothing is obviously jammed in there. Should I be able to move the agitator? I tried, it rotated about 1/8 turn and locked up tight.
Thanks
Hi.
Please try to do what I recommended in the previous post.

Thanks for your help. Given the probable damage to the motor due to overheating when the drive train locked up, I don’t think its worth putting the dollars into an 11 year old machine. So I’ll be replacing it.
Thanks again.
You are welcome.

My washer just did this. It is a Roper direct drive made by whirlpool, 20 years plus old. I replaced the motor coupling and agitator cam (less than $40) and it works better than it has in the past two years. I guess the parts just finally wore completely out. If you have never worked on your machine before watch the online videos first. It will only take about 2 - 3 hours to fix both parts (or less if you are good with tools, I am a true novice so I’m very slow).
what is this? makes no sense.??
