Whirlpool won't agitate, but will spin

I have tried to find this answer in previous posts, but was unsuccessful. My washer fills, spins and drains, but will not agitate. I’ve replaced the "dogs" in the top of the agitator and it worked fine for some time, but now nothing happens with the agitator. At first there was an electrical smell or maybe burning rubber, but now no smell. I’ve read several other forums and I may be looking at replacing the coupler and/or the motor. I read where someone suggested running the motor without being hooked up to the agitator, but how can I do that? I have not meter to do testing, but could get one if needed. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would remove the control panel screws, tilt the panel back, remove the timer and timer cover and check it for burnt contacts, if so, replace it, part # AP3605418

Thank you for the fast response, I will check that out and see what happens and will let you know what I find.
