Old Magic Chef, misses spin cycle

Hi All,

I have a 16 year old Magic Chef washing machine. In the gentle wash and regular wash nothing happens whenit hits the spin mode. In the Stain-Cleaner wash I can get it spin, but it doesn’t quite completely empty the tub. I ran a full cycle setting it at what is supposed to be the Gentle Wash, but there was never any pause and it kept agitating right thru the spin and rinse portions.

Also, how do I remove the agitator?

Thanks,
Stephen

Depending on which revision you have…
remove the top cap and bolt and it should pull right out.
Here’s your breakdown

Somtimes you have to pull REAL hard to get them off.
And yes, I think it’s your timer, part #AP289193
If you don’t want to put that much into it check on ebay for a used one with a 90 day warranty (part # 35-2845)
I’ve located used parts for some of the people around here that can’t afford the price of a new part.

Stephen,
i would have to say yours is the timr, part # AP289156

it sounds more like your washer - the motor is overheating and causing your issues.

Tad,

The problem you describe is really exactly the same issue as I had. Coincidentally, my machine was also 16 years old. I was trying to see if by posting here I might be able to isolate the problem, but that wasn’t the case. I think the problem may be that when the motor kicks into high for the spin cycle it overheats and the thermal protect kicks in to shut the machine off. I think this becuase ususally you can restart it again say a half an hour later and it will work. I finally gave in and bought a new machine. I figured that since I really didn’t know for sure what the problem was, buying a motor or timer, which were fairly expensive just as a guess, maybe to have to buy the other also and worst case have a repair guy come out to figure out for sure what the problem was, just didn’t make economical sense.

Sorry I can’t be of more help, but you gotta admit 16 years isn’t too bad…
