Problems in the spin cycle

The washing machine run fine until the spin cycle. At first, it would not spin at all. I turned the tub by hand and then it would spin. When the lid was lifted during the spin, it would stop instantly. Is this normal? I should have mentioned, this is the neighbors machine and she doesn’t know if it did this before. Anyways, is it normal to stop so quickly, even making noise like the brakes were slammed on? If it is normal, thanks. If it is not normal, what could be going out? Thanks

Sounds like a worn thrust bearing. This is responsible for releasing the brake so the basket can spin. If it is worn, the brake won’t fully release, and it will stop more abruptly.
