When I open the lid during the spin cycle the tub does not brake to a stop. It just spins until it naturally comes to a stop.

If you have small children in the house this could be a problem. If they stuck their arm inside while it was still spinning, well, you know. Beyond that, as long as the unit is washing ok I dont see a problem with it.

Thanks for the note, I would really like to know if the problem I have is due to the wiring of the motor or does it have something to do with the brake mechanisum. How do I troubleshoot the problem.

When the brakes fail the tub will spin during wash and if this is the case the brake is bad and you need to get it repaired because this can cause problems. But if the tub is not spinning during wash then it is likely the brake isn’t the problem. There is a bearing under the large pulley that could the your problem. When the motor stops the brake is supposed to engage itself. When the brake engages the pulley spins backward but if the bearing is bad the pulley will not spin backward freely therefore the brakes will not engage. But during wash the motor forces the brakes to engage essentially un-sticking the pulley. The little bearing is cheap and easy to fix so if that is the problem I would go ahead and replace it.
