Will not spin until you lift the lid

I had noticed the washer sounded different when it went to the spin cycle - humming instead of the usual sound. I lifted the lid and found it wasn’t spinning. Close the lid and it then runs fine. The second half of each spin cycle may or may not work on it’s own. I have replaced the brake and drive tube, the clutch pads/spring and the transmission (one at a time to see if it is fixed yet). The washer is running better than it has in years except at the start of each spin cycle we have to go lift the lid to get it to spin. When the lid is lifted the motor slows down. Just as it stops there is a ‘klunk’ and then a slight rotation to the basket. Put the lid down and then it is fine. Any advice?

The clunk might be a loose spin basket drive block nut.

Start the washer in the beginning of spin, if the timer does not interrupt power during spin period, you have a bad timer.Order AP3019801

Thanks for the reply and sorry for not getting back sooner - l haven’t been online a lot lately :frowning:

The drive block nut seems tight, and the ‘clunk’ seems to be coming from the gearcase area. It only happens when the issue occurs (lift the lid, motor slows to stop -clunk- tub rotates slightly, close lid and normal spin). I did start the washer in a spin cycle and it started right up like it should. I’m not quite sure what you mean by the timer interrupting power but if you mean the spin cycle stops halfway and then starts again than that happens normally most of the time. Some time you still have to lift the lid to get the 2nd half of the spin to work though. Could the timer start the moter but somehow not engage the drivecase?

Watch the washer near the end of a wash cycle, then into spin. If the timer fails to briefly stop power during spin, you have a bad timer.

Isn’t that the same thing I mentioned earlier? The second half of the spin cycle may or may not ‘catch’ and work normally? What could possibly allow the motor to run at the start of the spin cycle but not turn the basket unless you stop and restart the circuit (lift lid, turn off and back on etc)?

Ahhh, I see now. It isn’t a pause during the spinning of the drum, and it isn’t a pause between agitate and spin. The pause is between drain and spin. I hadn’t realized there was an extra step in there, sorry I didn’t get your point earlier. I just needed it dumbed downed a bit more - the mister rodgers version is here:

Thanks for your help!

OK, I replaced the timer and the problem still remains. Any other suggestions? I’ve put too much money into the washer to stop now.

During the spin period, the timer must interrupt power long enough for the neutral clutch to engage inside the tranny.
