Refrigerator Mod # AFI2538AEB Freezer Evap Coil Freezing Up & Blocking Air Flow

Help: My Amana refrigerator, Model # AFI2538AEB freezer coils are icing up and blocking air flow to the refrigerator section. I had a repair guy (can’t exactlly call him a technician) come out the first time and diagnosed the evaporator fan bad. It was frozen solid with ice. The coils and surrounding areas were full of ice. I even had and have solid ice forming on the front side of the panel in the freezer section as well. He ordered a fan and when it came in he replaced it. Well, within days, the ice was building up again. I am not convinced the fan was actually defective since it was encased in ice.

He left and said he would have to consult with his supervisor on the issue. He called and said he would be back a few days later. He then told me he had called Whirlpool and they told him to look for an air leak. Since he had already determined that the door seals were okay, he put putty around all of the lines going into the freezer that were visible. He also placed a little putty on the screw holes. Guess what? Within a week I had my ice build up again although not quite as bad. My guess is that I have a defrost problem although my repair guy did nothing more than a simple check with no real trouble shooting analysis. To be candid, he appeared to be a put it and replace it until you find the problem repair guy.

For additional information, I had previously had a compressor problem a few weeks earlier. The coolant apparently had a contaminat in it as it ate a hole through the line and allowed all of the collant to escape. The technician cut out the corroded section and replaced it along with the drier.
