Spontaneous Gooktop Crack

I met my girlfriend in '09 so the stove has been flawless from that time. Yesterday morning, while using both front burners to cook B-fast, I heard a loud snap. I even checked the bowl I was using as it sounded like glass. I finished cooking and ate. During clean up I noticed a huge crack (and numerous tentacles) extending from the left front corner of the cooktop through the left front burner and a crack extending all the way to the rear center of the cooktop. I ordered a replacement from this site last evening.

Question: Is it possible that the left front heating element somehow over heated (malfunctioned) causing the cracks? I am now hesitant to place the $250 new part onto the unit and risk a repeat but, I not noticed any differences in any of the burners performance over the past few weeks, etc. Thankks.

Sorry but I cannot be of much help here.
Is it possible that the element overheated?
Yes it is.

Each element should have a temperature limit thermostat built into it.
So that would have to fail.

Also the infinite control switch for that element would also have to fail.

All I can suggest is that you keep a close watch on the suspect element for overheating.

One thing to not is most often the tops just crack on their own.

Thanks very much!!
