Thermador display is very dim

The display on our oven is very dim, the only part of the display that shows anything is the clock, the oven still seems to work, but some of the numbers on the keypad do not function.

I was going to order the control kit, which includes the display head, main power relay, and the harness keypad.

If I change all that, the problem should be fixed?

TIA

I noticed that the Maytag display AP367514 looks very simlar to the display of the thermador.

Are they the same? Could I save $100 by getting just the Maytag display head.

thanks

Gene, I too am having the same problems. Is it advisable to buy the entire kit or should I just buy and install the relay board saving $110?
If I buy from appliancepartspros.com what is the return policy? If I buy the relay and find I need the display too will they exchange the relay for the kit and credit me the diffference?

What would you recommend?[/B]

g5reality,

All your questions should be addressed to the Appliance Parts Pros customer service (877-477-7278).

Gene,
My oven is a GSC30CV. First my display went out. I don’t recall it getting dimmer. I sent the display off to get repaired since the part is no longer available. They suggested I replace the power relay, which I did with part #AP2837330. That worked for about a month, then the display started getting dim. Now in the right light I can read the time, but not the temp. When it was going dim I could flip the breaker and give it a few minutes and then flip the power back on and the display would work long enough to set the temp. Now that doesn’t work. Will the control kit you mention here work with my oven? If not, is there something else I should be doing?

Hi Derek,

The kit listed above is not good for your range. The only way you can try is contact people from PCBR.BIZ and ask if they can rebuild the old part. If they can not then you have to look for a new range.

Hi gtbdevs

Yes, you need to replace the control kit. part number AP3382408

Be very careful removing the control panel. It is very heavy and if it falls down, the plug for the control panel circuit board could break off.

Good luck.

I have same problem but the display is totally black. Thermador has stopped making the display bd AP3382408. I took the board and out and tested the capacitors and they seemed to power up and release. I noted in the top left corner a burned out spot where a small light is located. Could this be my problem and if so can it be replaced. I see noway to access it or remove it. Thanks.

while I have all you brainiancs…I need to get access to the "on" indicator…the LED or lamp has fallen from the lens…there is just 1 small red lamp for all burners (ie not individual) kind of crappy system but what the heck…how to access? thanks

What is the complete model number of the oven?

I’ve got exact same problem, same burned spot on the upper left of the display. Not sure what the model number is, but it is double oven with convection. The manual says it is for SCD302T and 272T
SC302T, 301T and 272T
S302T, 301T and 272T
Any idea what the burned spot is related to?

Burned spot aside, I gather from the posts that I can use p/n AP3382408 or try to desolder and replace three capacitors. What do you suggest?

Apparently AP3382408 is no longer available. Now what???

Hey Doug, the burned out part is just from the manufacturer when they seal the control board. I replaced the three capacitors and has worked perfectly ever since.

Are the three capacitors on the display panel? I see 4, three of which match the description shown here. One of them terminates under the glass of the panel itself. Looks like a tough one to do. Thermador suggested a repair place that wants me to send the display plus two other boards to them. 1 week turn around for 180 bucks. I like $12 at my own pace compared to that.

I took just the display out…not the circuitboard that is located behind the plenum. It involves removing the touchpad controller. Then the display itself has 3 screws holding it in place.

I then replaced 3 capacitors…the two 470 uf’s and the 68 uf (all 35 V). They are all grouped together at one end of the board. The originals were rated at 105 deg C. I was able to buy 2 470 uf’s at 125 deg C, but the only 68 uf I could find was still 105 deg C. Th ethinking is that the heat from the ovens causes the capacitors to degrade over time. Watch the polarity when replacing them…the light stripe down the side of the new capacitor should be in the same orientation as the old one.

I bought the components at Mouser Electronics for a grand total of about $4. The shipping was more than the cost of the capacitors.

I am not a proficient solder iron user, but the whole repair took me less than 30 minutes, and the display is as good as new.

This may help with the repair. The photo is not of a thermadore but still is helpful.

I had the display out, no big deal to get it out again. How did you get to the back side of the capacitor that is through soldered behind the glass display?

Excellent advice on the polarity, I would not have paid any attention to it.

I bought the parts on Moser’s site, shipping twice as much as the parts.

If I recall correctly the circuit bd is hinged to the touch pad and just bend it apart. Is held together with just some sticky pad. Here is a pic that shows display bent away from the circuit bd. Hope that helps.

Thanks, you’ve been a big help. I’ll report back on the fix, I’m hoping for a big win!

Works like a champ. $4 out the door, thanks for the help, especially on the polarity and the hinged panel - I never would have figured that out for fear of breaking it.
Thanks again.

You should get yourself a $10 soldering iron and stock of $1 capacitors and fix them at home. Why bother sending them out? That is more like $170 or $180 bucks extra in your pocket for each call. It took me 30 minutes start to finish including getting the panel out and putting it back.
If you want I’ll do them next day for you for $50 each.
Hi Doug,
I have a new board that I never installed. I just put the new display light in and it worked so stored the board away. Now, the display light has dimmed again. Can you help me with what I need to do now?

Basically you need three capacitors, two 470 uf’s and a 68 uf (all 35 V). Once you go to any electronics web site you will find a multitiude of uf ratings and voltages. You just need to make sure you get the right ones. People here have suggested getting higher temperature rated ones, and I did. You need to unsolder the old ones and then solder in the new ones. Someone above suggested Mouser Electronics and that is where I got mine. Shipping was more than the parts. You can get a fine tip soldering iron and very fine solder at any Radio Shack. someone above suggested keeping track of the line on the old capacitors and reinstalling the new ones in the same orientation, I just used a sharpie to mark the board where the line should go. Then just take out the board and look for the capacitors - heat the opposite side of the board where the prongs come through and wiggle the capacitors out. The display panel is hinged to a degree on a series of connectors along the edge of the board and will pivot away so you can get to the back of the on capacitor.
