My front load washer is 10 years old and stopped spinning. I confirmed motor runs ok and coupler is slightly worn but ok. There is some oil coming from gearcase. I removed the gear case. Turning the input shaft causes the agitator drive shaft to turn clockwise and then counterclockwise with a deadzone in between. The larger collar shaft (drives the spin function?)coming out of the gear case does not move at all when turning input shaft. Is there a way to confirm the gear case is bad before I order another one?
I think you just did.
Rebuild or replace the transmission, replace the clutch and coupling and see if you are not good to go.
Thanks for the feedback. After reassembling gear box, it now appears to operate normally. I am not sure what was not right inside but the reassembly (with no internal repairs) seems to have corrected that problem. On reassembly though I noticed the flat spots on one side of the coupling were worn. I had been looking for broken prongs or disintegrated rubber and had not noticed the wear on disassembly. So I also replaced the coupling. Washer works fine now.
Great, glad you got it going and thanks for the update
