Thought maybe some of you pros out there might be able to help me. I replaced the tub seal in my top load GE washer a couple of months back . Everything was great up until today when it started leaking again. I’m certain it is leaking, since I took washer into my shop, hooked it up, and ran it through a cycle with the front off. Water running right out of tub bottom.
My question is, when replacing the seal, should you use any kind of sealant to help it. All seemed to fit tight when I did it originally.

It does help to soften the seal by rubbing it with some liquid detergent before putting it in, but even if you did not it should have worked ok.
I really cannot think of why it should have failed, you may have tightened things to tight, or left some grit in there or just had some very bad luck.

I tore the washer down again. It doesn’t take long the second time!
The seal actually still looks good. It looks to me that the shaft from the transmission is scored slightly. When I replaced the seal last time, I noticed it, but didn’t pay much attention to it. Possibly I could fill the scored area with JB Weld, file/sand smooth, and see what happens, but the transmission is beginning to make a noise anyway, so it may be time to replace.
Okay, that sounds right, those seals do take a long time to wear out or become damaged.
I think your decision to replace is probably a good one. A basic top loader, no frills or electronics will do a great job for you, come with a good warranty and should leave you free to worry about other things.
