Whirlpool Washer doesn't spin

I’m hoping that this will end up being a relatively low-cost fix, regardless of the labor involved, as this washer belongs to my mom and her budget is very limited.

Anyway…this is a 16 year old washer, and just today it stopped going through the spin cycle. I believe that it still agitates normally (will confirm this with her later) but when the spin cycle starts, she said it just drains the water and makes a loud mechanical buzzing sound with no movement of the tub. She said it sounds like plastic gears grinding.

I looked up the parts diagrams here a little while ago and glanced at them, but I don’t know washers well and didn’t see anything that jumped out at me right away as a likely culprit.

Any ideas?

Thanks, I’m hoping to be able to tear it down tomorrow to confirm, unless my dad or younger brother beats me to it. Will report back with the findings.

No need to tear it down to confirm. All you need to do is tilt it back far enough to inspect the connection between the motor and the gear case.

If it was the coupling it would not agitate either, the same coupling is in charge of both functions

Just wanted to update this in case anyone searching has the same issue. The coupling mentioned above was the issue, I found one locally and the washer is still going strong over a year later.

Thanks again for the help!
