Whirlpool Washer Motor Hum, Basket does not spin

Hi!

I have a Whirlpool Washer that has been my trusty friend for almost 20 years and have never had any issues. Recently, the basket will not spin. If I spin the basket by hand, and restart the washer, the tub will spin accompanied by a rattling, grinding noise, then it would stop. I can hear the motor hum, but not spin, and I quickly shut it off.

I have replaced the drive couple, the clutch, and now finally the transmission, and the same thing happens.

I found this website, and did a little research and tested the brakes-when the trans is installed, I cannot spin the input shaft counter clockwise, and the tub does not spin. Based on your "sticky" post this leads me to believe it’s the brake shoes. However, when I pull the trans, and actually turn the brake shoe cam lever band hand, the brakes release and the tub spins freely. Possibly I compress the lever more than the motor can?

I can’t see anything stuck in tub, but I have not removed it (I need to by the spanner).

Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated!! LOL

Thanks!!
Brian

If you turn the tranny coupler clockwise and it jams up, you have stuck brake shoes. Just go to my sticky "replacing direct drive brake shoes.
