My Whirlpool washer will not drain, spin or agitate. There is a loud hum from the motor, which eventually trips the breaker (no smoke yet). Would this more likely be a gearcase or motor problem?
Thanks

It could be either, or it could be that sock you have been looking for is in the pump or it could be the coupling as failed and is jamming things.
Take the cabinet off and check the pump and then the coupling. Then see if you can turn the transmission with the coupling piece and if the motor will run when it is off the transmission.
That should enable you to find the problem.
I figured it out when I took it apart. There’s an electrical component on the side of the motor. I think it’s the motor start capacitor, but not sure. The two leads to that had become disconnected, possibly during an off balance load. I reattached the leads and all is well. For curiosity’s sake, I disconnected them again and started a cycle. I was rewarded with the electrical hum I described previously. So that was without a doubt the problem.
Yep that is the capacitor and glad you found it. It is really unusual for it to fail, which I why I did not mention it, and really odd that the wires came loose.
Thanks for the update, good luck going forward.
