Will Not Spin or Agitate

After washer fills - hear grinding noise. Agitator will not turn. Also will not turn on spin cycle. Tried turning by hand - only partial turn then locked up. Both directions. Could this be the cluthch? I replaced the motor coupling a few years ago - does not resemble same symptons at all. Your help greatly appreciated.

Check out the sticky on brake problems on direct drive machines by Richappy at the top of the Washer Forum. It will help you diagnose your problem which may be a brake shoe issue.

If it is not, sounds like the transmission will have to be replaced, in which case a new machine may be the better solution.

Thanks. Able to remove gear drive and rotate tub by hand going counterclockwise. Ruled out brakes. Started to focus on gear drive - then I separated motor from gear drive. Could not turn get gear drive to rotate - then finally it did - intermittently by turning the coupling - then consistently. Reassembled unit. As soon as agitation cycle began, the gear drive locked up. I could hear the grinding noise once more. I suspect that is the stripped gears in the tranny. I’m thinking 11 years was okay.

Sure sounds like the transmission. Here is the part if you decide to repair it

but given the cost I would recommend a new, no frills direct drive top loader just like you have.

Good luck.

I need to replace the auger in the ice maker, I have it out of the bucket but can’t get the blade assemble off.

Any suggestions or tips for removing the blades would be appreciated.

Thank you
