Maytag Performa grinding noise

I have a Maytag Performa brand washer that makes a grinding noise through all the cycles. I tilted it and worked the belts, it seems to be coming from the water pump. I believe the part runs $50 or so. My question is first is this that difficult to fix and 2nd is this washer a decent model or am I going to be chasing problems from here on out? Also how can I be sure it is the pump pulley going out? Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Matt

Hi Matt

The only way we can give a definitive diagnosis on noise is to be there and hear where it is coming from. We cannot do that, so you must do it for us.

It is likely to be the pump, it has been a problem on this machine and has been changed. If you are confident it is the pump, it is a fairly easy repair. Maytag has redesigned the part, here is the technical bulletin.

I think this is a good machine and I recommend you replace the pump and see if that doesn’t result in years of service.

Thanks guys!! ordered the part, installed it, and no more grinding noise…but now I have another question. The agitator floats up during agitation and I cant get it to stay down. Is there some kind of locking mechanism that I can’t seem to latch or is it broken? I can’t find any broken edges. How does this attach?

The top half should screw into the agitator shaft and hold the entire agitator on.

Is your screw missing, or are the male or female threads stripped?

on this model the blade part slides onto another, then the whole assembly is bolted onto the shaft. mine the blade part wont stay on the part that bolts to the shaft. I dont see any broken bits, its more like the clip isnt tight enough.
