Roper washer won't spin

water empties from the barrel, but it doesn’t spin. We have been able to turn it a bit in the past and then get the machine to spin. However, last night, when you try to manually spin the barrel, it is VERY resistant. Then we did get it to spin but not as fast as it should. Also had to take out much of the load to spin well enough.

Most likely the problem is a bad clutch (5 on the [AP3094537](http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?diagram_id=110364&&model_id=263612"]gear case, clutch and motor break down diagram).

My washer makes a loud noise and I checked the chopper and cleaned it out but its still makes this sound so loud that we can only run it while we are gone. It washes the dishes nice but I think the cleanest method of repair is the replace the pump and motor assemble part number AP3778061 from you all. To replace this dishwasher with all the things we have on it would cost 500-625 dollars.
Are the instructions on this change out real detailed? jerry

Gerald, The most difficult issue is removing the dishwasher from under the counter (if its an under counter model).

  1. Disconnect electrical connection (2 wire nuts, ground wire & clamp).
  2. Secure water source to unit. Remove 3/8" tubing or hose from water valve just behind access cover.
  3. Remove the 2 screws At the top of the unit just above the door (below the counter top ledge).
  4. Lower the front of the unit by adjusting the leveling front feet upward approximately 1"-2". Remember, when reinstalling you must level the unit again.
  5. Tie a "tag line" (string) to the water tubing / hose and also the electrical wire. This helps when reinstalling.
  6. Now gently pull the unit forward, pay particular attention to the insulation on the top and sides, they like to hang-up on the unfinished parts of your space. I like having a "yard stick" handy, this works well to keep insulation reasonably in place.
  7. With the dishwasher exposed, you can easily access the under side and the pump. I believe there’s one bolt, an electrical connection, and rotate the housing counter-clockwise and its out!
    Good Hunting!

Gene, I have the same problem with my Roper (model RAS6233KQ2). The basket will spin very slowly every six or seven attempts. Sometimes I can rotate the basket and other times I can not. I checked the coupling…good shape. Checked the lid switch, it’s good. When I inspected the clutch it appears to look no different from that of a new one. What should I see as a defect?

Check the drive block (13 on the diagram). You can find the instructions in one of our previous posts: http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/washer-repair/373-not-spinning.html

Gene,
I had the same symptoms as the original post. I have a Roper model # RAS8333PQO. I followed your advice and replaced the clutch (same part number you listed - I ordered from http://www.appliancepartspros.com). Problem solved! Thank you!

The repair was fairly simple. The only close call was removing the bolt from the top of the shaft (located under the top cover of the agitator). The hex head of the bolt was badly corroded. This washer is only three years old! Almost not enough left on the bolt head to engage with the socket! Fortunately it came out. I replaced it with a stainless steel bolt and washer during re-assembly. I won’t ask why the manufacturer didn’t use a stainless bolt in the beginning because I already know the answer. Every penny counts!

Thanks again!
Bob

You are welcome Bob. I’m glad you were able to fix it. Thank you for the feed back.
