Washing Machine won't spin only tries

Hello,

I have a Whirlpool LSR8444LQ0 that is several years old, the other night we started a load and when it got to the cycle it just started trying to spin but just sits there and makes a grinding noise and doesn’t spin. I’ve taken it apart and can’t see anything obvious wrong with it but I just don’t know how to tell if the clutch, brake, or motor are bad. I sort of think it may be either the brake or clutch but how do I inspect them to see whether they are in fact bad or not? Any help would be awesome.

Thanks Tom

Have you pulled the motor off the tranny … If not please do so and check your motor coupling … A problem like this just stop spinning out of the blue sounds like a broken motor coupling

Hello Gabe, as a matter of fact I just did and went all the way down to the gear case assy and it looks like the gear itself has been stripped in certain places on it. This is the part I see on this link…item 25.

Gear & pinon - Used inside the gear case.
Part Number: AP3094405 made by WHIRLPOOL

my biggest worry is did something else go bad along with this and also now that I’ve opened this up to see this I’ve obviously let loose the oil that was inside the gear assy. What kind/type of oil should I get and use to put back inside once I get this part?

Thanks
Tom

I use a 50 weight oil in the gearcase … I would also check your drive block to make sure its not stripped or spinning freely on the spin tube … Here is a video to show how thats done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4O3n3r91B4&NR=1
