Whirlpool Duet Washer - Ouch

I just wanted to share my experience with you all in my trials and tribulations of trying to fix my washer. After getting F70 and F71 error codes, I did my due diligence and thought I had diagnosed it was either the user interface control or the main control unit.

After replacing both and the washer still not working, I swallowed my pride and opened my wallet and called in a reputable repair service. After two hours of troubleshooting with the tech, he called whirlpool. Upon their advice, we unplugged the motor control harness; afterwards the washer worked like a charm, save for the motor not being plugged in.

Checked continuity in harness, all good - motor control board bad.

Moral of story - exhaust all troubleshooting resources before throwing parts at the problem; especially when they cost around $200 each.

So - for those of you seeing the same error codes / problems, don’t automatically believe its either boards up top - check the motor control board!!

Thanks for the information. You are correct in that the error codes in almost all of these machines cannot be relied upon, and a lot of time you have to do a lot of old fashioned trial and error sleuting.

Glad you got it running.

I’m more of a gear-head, and in my opinion extended warranties on cars (other than powertrain-only sometimes) are a waste of money.

Anyone want to weigh in on appliance extended warranties? Is there a greater chance they will pay off (especially with fragile electronics boards!?)?

Thoughts/Experiences/Comments?? I am kind of kicking myself for not gettting the extended warranty on these machines, however hindsight is always 20/20…

The issue with extended warraties is that they go beyond the issue of dollars, they confer a certain calm on the buyer, the calm that comes with knowing that he or she is not exposed. This is the appeal of life insurance, which in many cases is a waste of money.

Looking only at the dollar aspect is insufficient.

As far as warranties on appliance are concerned, if a person does purchase a washer with electronics then I strongly urge the purchase of the extended warranty. Of course, the correct decision is to buy a basic top loader, a person saves money on the purchase and money on the repairs, if needed.
